- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (C.F.S.) is a relatively new "diagnosis"
as there can be a wide combination of symptoms (along with inexplicable fatigue
lasting more than 6 months). Until recently the medical profession did not accept
the condition, and many sufferers were told that their problems were all psychosomatic,
which didn't help them. Derogatory terms such as "yuppie flu" were
common in the past.
- Fatigue can be the result of many other conditions that your
health professional can determine for you, and effectively treat. For example,
you might be anemic (deficient in iron).
- Additional to the fatigue, there can be impaired concentration,
poor short term memory, depression, muscle pain, joint pain, unrefreshing sleep
which is often disturbed, sore throat, mild fever, swollen glands, and complaints
after even mild exercise. Rest does not necessarily help. Normal daily activities
are significantly affected. Please consult your health professional if you believe
three or more of these symptoms apply to you, and ask for a customised treatment
plan.
- Although it is a very common condition, the causes of C.F.S.
remain in dispute. It is probable that there is more than one cause. There seems
to be an immune system dysfunction which can be triggered by such factors as
viral infections (eg Epstein Barr virus), food and chemical sensitivities. Some
believe that there is indeed a psychosomatic factor, exacerbated by stress.
- Food and chemical sensitivities can be investigated and controlled.
Carefully controlled elimination diets can isolate the culprit foods and cosmetics
- naturopaths commonly offer this service. Often there is a sensitivity to sugar,
wheat, corn and rice.
- Sufferers often have gut problems (dysbiosis) - which can
be helped with probiotics such as lactobacilli and bifidobacilli.
- Herbal therapy focuses on adaptogens to cope with stress,
and immune stimulants.
- Supplements with nutrients involved in energy production has been found helpful
for many people. (See below).
- People with muscle pain find that magnesium supplementation
is useful.
- Select a supplement from the following recommendations for your country (clicking

Rarely is one product suitable for every body, so you will
need to search for those that suit you. Professional practitioners may well
prescribe "practitioner only products" after a consultation.
If the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome persists, you need to
make an appointment to consult a professional health practitioner.
Naturopaths consider WHY a person has Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and then treat accordingly.
