  • Hayfever is known as allergic rhinitis (an inflammation of the nasal tissues due to an allergen).
  • What might you be allergic to? You might have a family history, or a "pre-disposition". Common allergens are pollen, hay, grasses, animal dander, dust mites, and food allergies. If you can identify your allergen(s), then obviously avoid them as best you can. Avoiding dietary triggers is usually easier than avoiding environmental triggers.
  • Homeopaths can be helpful in making up customised remedies to your identified allergen(s).
  • Hayfever can often precede asthma.
  • Food triggers often include nuts (especially peanuts), chickpeas, eggs, fish, shellfish, wheat and dairy products. The best way of determining which foods might be implicated is to embark upon a naturopath supervised elimination diet, starting with eliminating the foods you tend to eat a lot of.
  • If you want to use herbal or nutritional supplements, it is best to commence at least 6 weeks prior to the beginning of the hayfever season.
  • Select a supplement from the following recommendations for your country (clicking the hyperlink refers you to a suitable supplier). Look for products with the following ingredients: Vitamins A, B, C, E, bioflavanoids (bromelain, quercitin), n-acetylcysteine, Selenium, stinging nettle, goldenseal, echinacea, chomile, elder, goldenrod, garlic, olive leaf, Ligusticum poteri.

Rarely is one product suitable for every body, so you will need to search for those that suit you. Professional practitioners may well prescribe "practitioner only products" after a consultation.

If the hayfever persists, you need to make an appointment to consult a professional health practitioner.

Naturopaths consider WHY a person has hayfever and then treat accordingly.
